Local Employment and Skills Boards

Localism is promoted by the Coalition Government as being better aligned to real labour markets and the level at which true understanding and expertise about economic priorities and aspirations resides, within the private sector, local authorities and communities. In the employment and skills arena this local focus has been delivered through the many Local Employment and Skills Boards which are established across the south west. Each Local Employment and Skills Board is focusing on the promotion of skills, raising aspirations and increasing productivity; as well as providing information and understanding of sub-regional and local employment and skills data and developments.

As many any of the employment and skills issues and challenges facing local areas are not unique it is essential to consider them (and any potential solutions) across a wider geographical area and with a multitude of organisations that, in even small ways, can have a vital role to play. The Employment and Skills Partnership works with the south west’s Employment and Skills Boards to provide a forum where strategic issues can be raised with our Board members (and central Government) and where joint approaches to operational issues, challenges and solutions can be discussed and agreed.

As the Local Enterprise Partnerships, a core task of which ‘to provide the clear vision and strategic leadership to drive sustainable private sector-led growth and job creation in their area’ become established the need to consider employment and skill issues and agree solutions at a wider geographical level remain.
